Michigan Groom Accused of Running Over Groomsman Hours After Wedding Celebration

A couple from Michigan who had just gotten married was arrested just hours after the wedding because cops say the groom killed one of his groomsmen by running over him with a car.

The groom, 22-year-old James Shirah of Flint, is accused of killing his groomsman by running him over with an SUV after a fight on August 30. The Flint police department said on Facebook. Terry Taylor Jr., who was 29 years old, died at a nearby hospital after being taken there for treatment of serious injuries.

“After the wedding, he got into a fight, and the groom drove a big SUV at a high speed and purposely hit him,” police said.

The police didn’t say what Shirah and Taylor had been arguing about before the fatal episode. Gensee County Prosecutor David Leyton told CBS News, “I’ve never seen anything quite like this.” “I’ve seen people hit other people, but never so soon after a wedding.”

The couple allegedly got married at a nearby pizzeria and then went to a house where the celebrations continued, according to CBS.

Shirah is said to have hit Taylor with his car while he was outside of the house where the afterparty was being held. Leyton told CBS that the newlyweds allegedly left the scene of the murder and didn’t call the police until the next day. He said that choice made it “more difficult” for agents to “untangle what happened.”

The police said they caught Shirah and charged him with second-degree murder. Another person arrested was Savahna Collier, 21, who was married to Shirah and is suspected of being an accessory after the fact to a crime.

It looked like the couple would have to go to court on Thursday.
