One woman claims she has held a Concealed-Cary License for years but has never had to shoot her pistol until Saturday night when danger appeared through her daughter’s bedroom window.
Even if the broken outside windscreen is repaired, one family’s trauma has already permeated their South Shore condominium.
“That motherly instincts kick in, so as soon as something happens, it’s like fight or flight,” she explained.
The mother, who begged ABC7 to keep her and her family’s identities private, stated that the incident occurred before 11 p.m.
Her 18-year-old daughter had just returned to her bedroom from taking a bath. “So I put on the towel and raced out of my room. I’m like, “Yo, someone’s trying to come through my window.” So, my mother took action right away,” the daughter explained.
“He was dangling from her window. I informed him I had a gun. I’m gonna shoot. He just didn’t quit. I gave a warning shot. “I had no idea he had been hit,” the mother added.
That is until police arrived on East 69th Street near Oglesby and discovered the 36-year-old suspect, who had been wounded in the leg. He was transferred to a hospital in fair condition.
His life was spared, but he now carries what the family hopes is a painful lesson. “Next time you think about coming through somebody’s window, you just remember how that bullet felt,” she told her daughter.
The mother also hopes to relocate soon, especially since cops confiscated her firearms.
The suspect faces charges on Sunday night.
Last weekend, at least 31 people were shot, five of whom died, in Labor Day weekend gun violence across Chicago, according to police.
